If you are wondering where to take the kids for the summer holidays, look no further than Newark and Sherwood. There is so much to do across the region that we found it hard to know where to start!

Ingenious Inventions at the National Civil War Centre, Newark, 29 July – 3 Sept Ingenious Inventions Summer Holiday Family Fun at National Civil War Centre

Kicking off the summer holiday fun is the National Civil War Centre, which is running the Ingenious Inventions programme of family activities. It is all about 17th century science with activities including making your own telescope and meeting some strange scientists!

You might bump into Mad Madge of Newcastle – one of England’s first science fiction writers and the only woman in the 1600s to be invited to visit the Royal Society. Or maybe Prince Rupert of the Rhine will tell you how he turned Windsor Castle into a laboratory and invented a torpedo, a diving bell and exploding teardrops.

  • It is free with standard admission charges.

Robin Hood Festival 2017 at Sherwood Forest, 31 July – 6 August  Sherwood Forest Visitor Center

Summer holidays at Sherwood Forest are always fun, but even more so during the Robin Hood Festival. This is the 33rd annual event in the magical setting of Sherwood Forest. It is for all ages, but kids particularly love it as they are immersed in the magic of the tale of Robin Hood and his woodland home. There are a wide range of different activities and entertainment as well as craft stalls.

  • It is free to enter.
  • There is a £5 parking charge.
  • There are also events that are charged for and need to be pre-booked. View events.

Gloworm Family Festival at Clumber Park, 19-20 August Gloworm Festival at Clumber park Advertisement

This is a family friendly festival that takes place in the beautiful Clumber Park. Designed from the outset as a family event, it is structured around different age groups. Entertainment in the Big Top ranges from Post Man Pat to the Lip Sync Battle and there are lots of interactive activities such as Zumba and science and magic shows. There are oodles of workshops and also activities specifically for babies and toddlers.

What you need to know
  • It is recommended to pre-book workshops as numbers are limited. They are being filled with 50% pre-bookings and 50% walk-ins on the day.
