Newark is a picturesque town to visit, with a gorgeous cobbled market square and stunning Georgian Town Hall and Newark Castle. With hundreds of years of history, Newark is the proud owner of some of the most beautiful architecture in the area including examples of Tudor and Regency buildings. When you visit Newark, when walking around the town, we always recommend you look up – look up and discover for yourself the beauty of these buildings.
Standing front and centre is the UK’s finest example of a Georgian Town Hall, built in 1776 by John Carr of York and just behind this is the Buttermarket – a longstanding favourite of residents of Newark. This stunning building was first built in 1774 on the site of the old shambles – which would have meant it was originally an open-air meat market. From 1994 to 1988 the Buttermarket was used as a market hall before being converted into an indoor shopping centre with over two floors in May of 1990.
The Buttermarket’s beautiful Victorian entrance on Middle Gate is a focal point of the town and provides an attractive route from one side of Newark town centre to the other. We recommend you wonder through the building, marvel at the beautiful architecture, peruse some of the shops and then emerge at the top of a set of stone steps leading to the stunning Newark Royal Market Place – it’s a pretty special sight, especially when the sun is shining!
This summer, the Buttermarket is being transformed into a brilliant, vibrant atmosphere as pop-up shops make this historic building their home for the next couple of months, providing a range of services, including food and drink, bath bombs and home interiors.
All pop-up shops are independently owned and offer an experience you won’t find on the high-street, offering bespoke experiences to cater to your needs and wants. This summer the Buttermarket will have a bustling, vibrant atmosphere that makes it a joy to just walk through, let alone shop in.
This beautiful space plays host to a whole variety of different shops for you to choose from – for something that is a little different, more personal and absolutely stunning. From stylish home decorations, to beautiful artwork to delicious homemade soups, there is something for everyone. You can pick up some bits and bobs for your home, choose a stylish new outfit or pick out a gift for someone you love. You can then enjoy a bite to eat, including sumptuous homemade soups, vegan treats or while away the rest of the day with friends in a board game and events cafe. For more information on what shops are currently in the Buttermarket please visit Newark & Sherwood District Council’s website.
The Buttermarket is a really stunning building with a vibrant and brilliant atmosphere within – a lovely place to shop and explore. This summer, when you visit Newark, we recommend you see for yourself what this historic building has to offer.
