We are a mere two weeks away till the start of summer! The school holidays are always fun in Newark & Sherwood and this summer will be no exception – across the area there is a brilliant mix of free and paid for events and activities for all ages and interests!
Summer Time Adventures
If you want to wander around a beautiful historic setting whilst finding clues and solving mysteries then we’ve got you covered – these trails and activities promise to be full of fabulous family fun!
National Civil War Centre – Topsy Turvey Summer. This summer the National Civil War Centre are turning summer upside down with their fantastic family activities! Discover why the Civil War led to a ‘World Turned Upside Down’ with hilarious performances and topsy turvey craft activities. Plus with their fantastic family discount, and group including a paying child received 20% off admission! Topsy Turvey Summer begins on the 20th July.
Thoresby Park – Trail of Imagination. It’s a fact that children have a better imagination than adults and that’s why Thoresby Park needs you! Help them to identify the mythical and magical creatures living on the estate! Trails are available to purchase at the Visitor Centre for £2 each from the 20th July.
Rufford Abbey – Superhero Trail. Have you ever thought it would be super cool to have a special power? Flying, invisibility, incredible strength, mind reading, super speed…or all of them?! This summer head over to Rufford Abbey to begin your training to become the ultimate superhero at their Superhero School. You’ll be able to win points, defeat the baddies and earn your own super powers with Rufford Abbey’s training trail – masks and capes are a must!
Southwell Minster – Brickminster. Discover Southwell Minster this summer with a unique trail! Find Lego models hiding in the Cathedral which tell the stories found in the Minister’s beautiful stained glass!
Where Legends Grow
This summer, discover the ancient legend of Robin Hood and his significance to the beatiful ancient oaks in Sherwood Forest and start your own adventure!
The Story of Sherwood – Guided Walk. The legendary Sherwood Forest has many tales to tell. Learn how Sherwood has been shaped over thousands of years by natural and human forces to become the iconic place we know today! The RSPB’s knowledgeable and legendary guides, will tell you all about Sherwood’s juicy secrets! Walks take place on Friday’s (26th July & 16th, 23rd and 30th August) at 14.00 – 15.30 and on Sunday’s (28th July & 4th, 18th and 25th August & 1st September) at 11.30 – 13.00.
Uncover Sherwood Forest with Robin Hood and Maid Marian. Join the RSPB for a guided walk like no other in the heart of Sherwood Forest. Lady Marian and the famous outlaw Robin Hood invite you to join them as they re-tell tales from the medieval days, share secrets of the forest and guide you to Robin’s famous tree, The Major Oak. Tours will run on the 2nd, 16th, 23rd and 30th August from 11.30 – 13.00.
Have-A-Go Archery. Think you’ve got what it takes to be an outlaw? Here’s the chance to put your archery skills to the test, at the home of Robin Hood! Reach the Core Historic will be providing traditional English Archery for all ages during the summer holidays. Archery costs £4 for 6 arrows. Drop in anytime between 11am and 4pm from the 20th – 21st July, 27th – 28th July, 3rd – 11th August, 17th – 18th August & 31st – 1st September.
Arts & Crafts at the Sherwood Forest Arts and Crafts Centre. On the 31st July, 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th August head to the Sherwood Forest Arts and Crafts Centre to get involved in some brilliant children’s craft activities and get inolved in some free have-a-go circus skills on the 14th & 24th August.
Outdoor Entertainment for the Entire Family
This summer Newark & Sherwood is home to brilliant, top-class outdoor theatre for all ages across a number of different venues.
Southwell Minster. Southwell Minster is the home of brilliant outdoor theatre this summer after last year’s success. Allow the girls of Handlebards to entertain you with their hilarious adaptation of The Tempest on July 27th and then laugh your socks off at the Handlebards’ boys’ adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing on the 7th August. For older families then head to Southwell Minster to catch two brilliant performances of Not Just Fish & Ships on the 25th & 26th July.
Sherwood Forest. On the 28th July the brilliantly funny girls of Handlebards will stop at Sherwood Forest to deliver a hilarious adaptation of The Tempest. Expect riotous amounts of energy, a fair old whack of chaos and a great deal of laughter.
Rufford Abbey. This summer Rufford Abbey is the home of cinema as they show some of our favourite films in this stunning setting. Sing along with Bradley Copper & Lady Gaga on the 26th July with a showing of the beautiful A Star is Born and then on the 27th join P.T Barnum’s famous circus with a showing of the brilliant The Greatest Showman. If it’s Disney that you want then head over on the 27th July for a showcasing of the new Mary Poppins Returns and then on the 28th July enjoy the new live action Dumbo. However, if it’s superheros you want, Rufford Abbey has you covered with over three days (16th, 17th & 18th August) they are showing the best superhero movies around: Marvel’s Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War & Avengers: Endgame.
Outdoor Events and Festivals
The Maize at Kelham Hall & Country Park. Get lost this summer in The Maize at Kelham Hall – with over five acres of twists and turns to navigate, The Maize is fantastic fun for all the family. The Maize opens on the 20th July and closes on the 30th August.
European Juggling Convention. The European Juggling Convention comes to Newark from the 3rd – 11th August. The EJC is one of the world’s biggest social gatherings of jugglers, aerialists, hula hoopers, flow artists, extreme unicyclists, whip crackers and knife throwers. A festival of talent and skill but also of fun and relaxation! On the 4th August it’s also the Big Day Out! in Newark town centre – the festivities start at the Riverside with a colourful parade over the river, past the Castle and on to the Market Square. There will also be a spectacular performance of Hotel Paraisdo at the front of Newark Town Hall!
Robin Hood Festival. Jousting! Archery! Sword fights! Live action with Robin Hood and his Merry Men! Join the RSPB in the forest from the 5th – 11th August for a fantastic medieval feast of family fun, entertainment, music, awesome horse-back stunts and more, under the magical canopy of Sherwood. Come celebrate this legendary outlaw in a festival like no other!
Gloworm. The Gloworm Festival is a brilliant two-day event that has been especially created for grownups and their little (or not so little) people Thoresby Park invites you to come and play in a warm, welcoming and creative environment, lose your inhibitions, let your hair down and have some fun!
Southwell Music Festival – Crash, Bang, Wallop! The Family Concert. Be part of the Festival’s nosiest event! Join the Music Festival’s professional musicians to discover the wonderful world of percussion – whatever you can hit that makes noise! You’ll have a chance to make your own instrument (or just bring a saucepan and wooden spoon) and take part alongside professionals as you create and perform a special piece. Perfect for all ages and those who benefit from a more relaxed performance environment.
