Discover the picturesque town of Southwell this August.

Southwell is often referred to as the jewel in Nottinghamshire’s crown, with beautiful buildings, gorgeous scenery and excellent independent shops. It’s the perfect place to spend a day or two, exploring the history, culture and beauty this town has to offer.

This August there is lots to see and do throughout the town – from music festival, to open days and evening some horse racing! If you’re here with the family, with someone you love or just yourself, there is something for everyone in Southwell.

Southwell Minster:

With it’s Norman Nave and famous twin pepperpot towers, this beautiful building is at the heart of Southwell. This bank holiday the Minster will have a bustling and vibrant atmosphere as it opens its doors for a number of events – from a family fun trail involving Lego, a plant lover’s haven, two fascinating open days and the exquisite Southwell Music Festival.

The Workhouse

If buildings could talk, the tales the Workhouse would have to say! Explore this amazing National Trust building with a variety of new and exciting exhibitions as well as brilliant Workhouse Live events. Discover how the National Trust conserve their beautiful wallpaper, learn about the Firbeck Infirmary through the lives of 6 nurses who worked there and see a stunning art exhibition that discusses the contemporary issues of being young, a parent and homeless.

Or if you want to live the history of The Workhouse, take part in one of their Workhouse Live events – take a walk around Southwell with The Workhouse’s founder, Reverend John T. Becher, discover the lives of inmates, go behind the scenes with a family-focused tour and pick your own selection of fresh fruit and veg:

Southwell Racecourse

Fancy a day out at the races? Southwell Racecourse, just outside the picturesque town of Southwell and offers a unique blend of charm, excitement and comfort, making it one of the premier sporting venues in the East Midlands!

This bank holiday the racecourse have two brilliant events for you to enjoy. Ladies day is always a highlight in the racecourse’s calendar, a perfect chance to get glammed up, enjoy the atmosphere and maybe bet on the right horse too! Nottinghamshire Sports Day is a fantastic day out as it features exhilarating all-weather racing and a host of different activities for the kids including golf and cricket.

Museum  of Timekeeping

The Museum of Timekeeping cares for a unique collection of artefacts at the home of the British Horological Institute in the picturesque village of Upton, not far from Southwell town. Wonder around the museum on Friday the 16th & 23rd August and enjoy the museum’s open day on the 17th August where you can discover the stories behind their collection of clocks and watches.
