ovo tour of britain cycling race 2017With fabulous forests, alluring lakes and stunning views, Newark and Sherwood have a lot to offer both on-road and off-road cyclists. This year, the Tour of Britain is returning to the region in September, as is the local Festival of Cycling that has introduced many young people to the sport and made it a firm favourite.

The region is located on the National Cycle Network, taken in by Sustrans cycle routes 6, 64, 645 and 647; Sherwood Pines and Sherwood Forest are included as routes in the Mountain Bike Guide Nottinghamshire; and Newark & Sherwood District Council lists many cycling friendly paths and parks on its website.

Cyclists at Sherwood PinesThere are numerous local cycling clubs, and as a result the area is perfectly equipped for visiting cyclists, with cafes offering coffee and cake stops and cycling shops for rental, repairs and maintenance. Many accommodation providers are also cyclist friendly and visiting cyclists are warmly welcomed. For example, Dunstall Barns self-catering accommodation in Sutton on Trent has a bike shed and outside washing facilities for cyclists, while Blue Barn self-catering cottage near Southwell also offers safe overnight bike storage. The region has a wide choice of self-catering options plus B&Bs, which can be explored in our accommodation section.

Please watch our photo video below, which contains images taken by the wonderful cyclists in the Breeze North Notts women-only cycling group over the Autumn and Winter 2017/2018 as they wheeled their way across our region and made many a cake and coffee pit stop! Thank you Breeze North Notts for sharing these fabulous images – if you like them, there are more on our Cycling in Newark and Sherwood Pinterest page.
