This summer, the circus comes to town…
Newark is playing host to the year’s biggest party – a party where talented and awe-inspiring artists wowing attendees with their tremendous skills. It’s the one and only European Juggling Convention!
The European Juggling Convention has been to many places across Europe, including Poland, Finland, Greece and Spain but this year, this world renowned event will be coming to Newark Showground – and we promise it’s going to be the best year yet! This is a festival of talent and skill, celebrating jugglers, aerialists, flow artists, whip crackers, knife throwers and more – but this is also a festival of fun and relaxation and we cannot wait to take part.
The European Juggling Convention is the embodiment of a family friendly festival – with a warm vibe and the opportunity to meet old friends, make new ones, practice your skills and watch some truly awe-inspiring performances, it is a festival for everyone. Exchange ideas and techniques, learn new skills and tricks, but most importantly, just have fun and get creative.
There is so much happening at the European Juggling Convention for you to get involved in, whether you are a complete novice or a skilled performer. From an Extreme Unicycling Championship where you can practice your skills on a unicycle, to a Western Arts Village where you can try your hand at awesome skills at their throwing range, whip workshops, lasso lessons and gun spinning. There will also be balloon competitions and classes with their Balloon Jam Room as well as the brilliant Lost in Translation performers who will wow audiences with their incredible aerial and acrobatic Masterclasses every morning – take part or watch, but one thing is sure it’s going to be amazing.
EJC is the name and juggling is their game – practice your juggling skills in their fantastic juggling hall. Or if it’s a fire show you’re after, want to take part in a who can juggle the longest competition or just fancy messing around with some fun and games – the European Juggling Convention has it all!

The EJC are also bringing the show to Newark! An extraordinary day of activities is planned on the 4th August to welcome the European Juggling Convention to the beautiful, historic town of Newark. The day will welcome participants and attendees from across Europe and introduce them to the beautiful, historic town of Newark. Food and craft stalls will be open from 10am with live music from 11am with the circus officially coming to town at 3pm when the EJC welcome parade sets off from the Riverside at 3pm as they shower Newark with fun and wonder as they make their way past the Castle and towards the Market Place.
Once in the Market Place, Lost in Translation will take to the stage with their unbelievably brilliant – Hotel Paradiso. You can expect spectacle, comedy, drama, and delight at this Norwich-based circus company wow the audience with their dazzling skills. The Hotel Paradiso is run-down and facing bankruptcy; will it be rescued by its delightful if slightly dotty staff, or will it fall ino the hands of the ruthless Banker? The cast will display a colourful mix of daring circus skills, physical comedy and theatre as they perform a range of breathtaking sequences that will have you off your seat!
In the evening the whole of Newark will witness a fantastical, fire show extravaganza with the Fire Gala Show at Newark Castle! Lights in Motion, from the Netherlands, will be opening with their spectacular fire ceremony. They will be joined by other performers from the UK, Czech Republic, America, Costa Rica, Germany and Estonia as they perform breath-taking artistic and technical routines. Then if it wasn’t already exciting enough – Glow Fx, a UK troupe, will be closing the gala show with a high energy spectacular display that you do not want to miss.
We are beyond excited to welcome the European Juggling Convention to Newark – to show off our lovely town but to also brush up on our juggling skills! There is truly something for everyone whether you’re a skilled juggler or a total beginner – whether you have come for the whole day or just for the Big Day Out.
